The Victorian Government is currently accepting tenders from construction firms to oversee the construction of over 1,000 new residences, in a project that will strengthen the construction industry.
The aptly named Building New Homes to Fight Homelessness project, was first floated last year, but has now been moved to priority status as part of the Government’s construction led COVID-19 economic recovery strategy.
The project forms part of the wider $500 million Building Works package to build and further upgrade community and public housing options.
The $209 million project will see construction of new residences that will house Victorians escaping family violence and homelessness.
The tender is currently open to appoint a construction contractor that will provide both independent oversight of buildings, as well as building work throughout the construction timeline.
The houses involved in the project will be built in areas identified as being of high need across the state.
They will include Geelong, Ballarat, Darebin, Maribyrnong, Stonnington and Whitehorse as well as properties in suburbs nearby areas with high rates of homelessness.
The new homes will be built over the next three years, with all properties to be completed by the end of 2023.
